The North Shropshire District is home to a number of bustling market towns and pretty villages. A country cottage holiday is definitely on the agenda in this area. With plenty of hill walks and horse trails available, an active holiday in Shropshire is certainly an option. Though those wanting a quiet getaway with lots of fishing and messing about in boats will also be happy! Key towns in the district include beautiful Ellesmere, Wem, Market Drayton and Whitchurch. All are ideal for a country retreat.
Visit Oswestry, on the Welsh border and explore the Welsh mountains, or visit the majestic castles of Powis, Chink and Whittingly. Take in the majesty of the Pistyll Rhaedr waterfalls, and buy something from the bustling street markets.
Shropshire’s main country town is Shrewsbury. It has a long history, which can be traced through the town’s interesting architecture. Walking tours are popular. Hire a holiday home nearby and visit the Shrewsbury Abbey and Shrewsbury Castle. Families will love Attingham Park – plenty to see and do. As the town is nearly surrounded by the River Severn, there are also plenty of water-based activities available for the whole family.
The World Heritage Site of Ironbridge and the fast growing Telford are well-worth a visit. Other towns in the area include Wellington, Madeley and Newport.
Bridgnorth is another popular destination for short breaks in Shropshire. The famous views over the Severn Valley are incredible. Much Wenlock is a delight, and is considered by many to be the “rebirthplace” of the modern Olympics. A traditional version is held every July and is lots of fun.
South Shropshire has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the gourmet town of Ludlow or the towns and villages like Bishops Castle, Church Stratton, Craven Arms, and Clum will be great options for a cottage holiday.
