The hills and woodlands of Cheshire in the Heart of England have become a favourite destination for walkers, cyclists and those looking for a more active outdoor holiday. That’s not to say Cheshire is without other attractions – its long history has left it with an enviable selection of stately homes, museums, and other historic artifacts dating back to Roman times. And its proximity to the Peak District National Park makes it an ideal destination for family holidays and short breaks. Horse riding, golf and narrow boat trips along the county’s fabulous network of waterways will provide additional holiday activities.
There is also plenty that will keep the family entertained, including an aquarium, a zoo, a home farm, high wire adventures in the Delemere Forest and vertical boat rides on the Anderton Boat Lift.
Cheshire is ideal for short breaks, and hiring a country cottage in one of the many pretty towns and traditional villages will be the perfect way to explore. In the Upper Weaver Valley, key towns to visit are Nantwich and Crewe.
The modern town of Warrington has also plenty to offer the visitor, from great shopping to the great outdoors. In the Vale Royal, no visit would be complete without a trip the Delemere Forest, and the region’s canals, rivers and meres.
The East Cheshire Edge shares some of the delights of the Peak District National Park, while the town of Macclesfield offers stylish shops and restaurants. Other lovely villages in the area include Bollington, Wilnslow and Poynton.
Ellesmere Port and the town of Neston are home to some lovely parks and gardens. The Port itself is now home to a busy shopping outlet and a traditional market. Don’t forget to include the delightful Parkgate village in your trip.
The rural tranquillity of Congleton Borough will be sure to provide the perfect country cottage holiday in towns like Congleton, Sandbach, Alsager, Holmes Chapel and Middlewich.
Other villages to consider as you explore the hills and woodlands by foot or on your bike include Hartford, Alderly Edge, Lostock Gralam, Glazebury, Barnton, Sutton Weaver, Daresbury, Chalmondeley, Grappenhall and Astbury.
