Overview

Home to the famous Oxford University, the county of Oxfordshire in the Heart of England, offers a broad range of holiday activities, whether you plan a short break, or a longer holiday exploring the many famous towns and villages. The best way to make the most of a holiday in Oxfordshire is to hire a self-catering holiday home, or country cottage, or perhaps even a chalet or lodge in a holiday park.

The best place to start your tour of the county is in Oxford itself. A number of tours and self-guided trails are available, which will allow you to see some of the major attractions, including the Ashmoleum Museum, Bodleian Library, Blenheim Palace, and a number of other historic buildings and churches. A number of significant cultural, artistic and entertainment festivals are held throughout the year, and there will be plenty for the whole family to do.

In South Oxfordshire, you’ll delight in the traditional teashops, or leisurely strolls down the river. Or perhaps, if you’re looking for something more adventurous, you can try your hand at some of the adrenalin pumping activities available. There is plenty to keep everyone happy - the kids will enjoy visiting Thomas the Tank Engine in Didcot for example. Some of the main towns and villages to consider when planning your holiday include Henley-on-Themes, Thame, Wallingford, Dorchester, Ewelme, and Stoke Row. You can explore historic sites dating from Saxon and Roman times, through to civil war reminders, and a range of other historic places, some with literary links.

North Oxfordshire is no less engaging! Your short break or family holiday could include everything from llama trekking to a narrow boat ride on the Oxford Canal. Follow the historic village trail, or simply relax in the lovely countryside. Places to include on your itinerary would be Banbury, Bicester, Kidlington, Deddington, Hook Norton, Broughton, Islip, Fringford or even Juniper Hill.
