Overview

Surrey, in the South of England, is a perfect destination for a country retreat or weekend break. The Surrey Hills are a particularly popular destination within the county.

The Surrey Hills were one of the earliest regions to be declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is the highest point in the South East of England. The views are spectacular, and make for a wonderful backdrop to for cycling and walking holidays. Birdwatchers and nature lovers will find plenty to keep them busy as they admire the area.

The best way to enjoy the scenery is to hire a country cottage or holiday home in the Surrey Hills and use it as a base to explore some of the lovely villages and market towns. Abinger is a particularly pretty village with a number of interesting sights. The riverside town of Betchworth is also a good option. Or perhaps you’d prefer to stop if for a pint at Cranleigh, England’s largest village. Other popular country towns where you’d find great guest houses and country cottages including Dorking, Farnham and Godalming. Or perhaps you’d prefer to see the county’s oldest working watermill – the Outwood Windmill.

The larger towns of Guildford and Haslemere offer a range of attractions to visitors, from sampling local produce to exploring some of the historical buildings.

Surrey is also home to a number of theme parks and family attractions – Thorpe Park in Chertsey and Chessington World of Adventures are popular destinations for an adventurous family day out.

History buffs should include Runnymede in their itinerary, and view where the Magna Carta was signed. There are also a number of castles and stately homes open to visitors in the region, including Hampton Court Palace and Kew Palace.

There is certainly plenty for the whole family to do – so hire a holiday house in Surrey and see it all!
