The West Yorkshire area has a long and tumultuous history, holding the title of being one of England’s most non-conformist regions – from the Chartists to women’s suffrage, and industrial reform. Its remarkable history is complemented beautifully with some of the loveliest landscapes in the North of England, which has been the inspiration for writers like the Bronte Sisters and poet Sylvia Plath. Along with the museums, galleries and historic buildings, West Yorkshire also offers golf, fishing, walking, cycling and more. It is the ideal place for a short break, and the picturesque towns and villages are perfect for a country cottage or park holiday.
Country towns like Otley, Ilkley and Wetherby, and towns like Hepden Bridge, and Marsden are good choices for holiday homes as they’ll provide a great base from which to explore the region often referred to as “Bronte Country.” If you’re on a literary tour following the trail of the Bronte Sisters, then Haworth would be an essential stopover.
The moors of Holmesfirth lead on to the Peak District National Park, with the other pretty Yorkshire Pennines areas around Huddersley and the Colne and Holme Valleys will provide access to the historic Yorkshire Mill Mile, where you’ll find converted mills sharing the region’s history, art and ale. You’ll find some of the most beautiful foot and cycle paths in these areas. You can even jump aboard a pleasure cruiser and sail down the cut at the restored South Pennine Ring.
Halifax and Wakefield are delightful options for holidaymakers, as are Castleford, Kirklees, Keighley and the Worth Valley.
Modern centres like Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and Doncaster offer much for the visitor too – a thriving arts and music scene with a number of annual festivals, plus a broad range of museums, excellent children’s activities, over 100 historic sites and buildings and more. West Yorkshire has plenty to offer, no matter what kind of holiday you’re after.
