If you need to take a break from the beach, a trip into one of Menorca's two biggest cities is just what you need. Ciutadella is one of Menorca's oldest settlements, and until the 1800's, was its capital. The picturesque harbour town is an exciting mix of the old and new - from fantastic medieval architecture to the café lifestyle at one of the many restaurants in town.
Ciutedella has a good public transport system, and is also a departure point for ferries to Mallorca (which can be seen across the sea on a clear day) and to Barcelona. While there is no beach at Ciutedella itself, there are some at nearby Cala Santondria and Sa Caleta.
Ciutadella is home to Menorca's famous annual festival - Fiesta de San Juan. Held in June each year, the festival includes street parades, equestrian displays and a whole lot more. It is definitely a "must do" in your holiday calendar.
Make your rental villa at Ciutadella a base to explore the west coast of Menorca, or take a few days out from the beach life to soak up the traditions and history of the city.
